DarkPlaces modelviewer

While we were working on a mod, Kazashi wanted to view his models ingame to determine if the animations looked correct, and to check if he got tags to export correctly, so I decided to make a minimod in which he could import all kinds of models for viewing.

In this mod you can spawn any types of models that DarkPlaces supports, and you can attach the models to tags, animate and spin them, all kinds of silly thing's you'd expect from a modelviewer. You can also control lights in the same manner, including attaching them to model tags, changing cubemaps on them, making them spin and such stuff.

Get the mod here. NOTE: Does not require Quake! RE-NOTE: It does kind of require Quake, if you plan to use the menu, since it's lacking menu graphics. I might update it to include it's own menu graphics at some point. But real men and women use the console for all their needs anyway!

Check out this screenshot!

By the way, if you haven't read the included readme.txt, you don't get to complain or ask questions.

World's largest map

Yes, that's right, another of my silly tests. Some may remember Supertorso, quite uninteresting thing really. This however, can prove to be more interesting.

This map, that only runs in the DarkPlaces engine, is ugly. Hey, it was made by me, what do you expect? But that's besides the point. This is, quite probably, the largest map in the world. I wonder if there is a Guinnes World Record category in large Quake maps... In any case, while being as large as this map is, it is actually "only" about 1/3 of DarkPlaces' full capacity. I could've just made a box-map that reaches the full capacity of the engine, but that would be even more pointless than this. This one is atleast mildly funny, which I hope you will think as well when you see it. Be sure to look around you as you spawn in, and try not to puke at the pure sight of the horrendous "skybox".

Keep in mind however, this map is not for lower end systems. I wouldn't recommend this map for users with ram below 256mb. Also expect precision errors the further you get from the center of the map. Even LordHavoc's GeForce 6800 U BFG OC couldn't handle things once he was really far away.

This map is mostly for giggles, just to show off some of DarkPlaces' capability.

Recommended console variables: r_fullbright 1, sv_maxvelocity 99999999

Installation/Usage information: Slap the pk3 into your id1 directory, and run darkplaces with the following commandline: darkplaces.exe +map spcscr (the bsp is called spcscr.bsp). All of the content was made by me, except for the earth picture which I think was taken by Apollo 17, so it should be public domain. Do what you feel for with this (with the exception of the earth picture).

spcscr_test1.pk3

I felt compelled to also upload the .map and .wad files for those who are interested. It will not load in any map editor :)

Huge thanks to Harb!inger of Fish for the inspiration and testing, and to LordHavoc for testing.

Hopefully this site will contain more crap in the future. Thanks to Echon for hosting.
